Traffic Steering (TS) Concept

In this tutorial, we explain Traffic Steering (TS) in O-RAN, a critical concept for optimizing network performance. We begin by discussing what Traffic Steering actually means, how it differs from Load Balancing, and why it was introduced as part of the O-RAN architecture.

Traffic Steering goes beyond simple load balancing by intelligently directing users between different cells or even across Radio Access Technologies (RATs) like 4G, 5G, and trusted Wi-Fi, depending on various factors like network load, QoS, and UE capabilities. While Load Balancing moves users between different layers based on load and user mobility, Traffic Steering takes a more granular approach, offering better control over how traffic is managed across a multi-RAT network.

The video also covers how O-RAN enables Vertical Traffic Steering, a more advanced mechanism for shifting users between different technologies, ensuring optimal network usage. Key inputs for effective Traffic Steering, such as radio conditions, UE capabilities, and network load, are also discussed.
