Samsung a leading provider of mobile phones and telecom systems reinforces its technology leadership with the world’s first successful demonstration of High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) technology, reaching speeds up to 3.6 Mbps, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Although there have been several demonstrations of speeds up to 1.8 Mbps in the past, Samsung's demonstration of HSDPA handset speeds of 3.6 Mbps is the industry's first ever.
The zx20, encased in a sleek Samsung-signature clamshell with silver and black accents, employs fast mobile broadband technology enabling consumers to download content seven times faster than phones operating on current 3G UMTS and GSM/GPRS networks. As a 1.8 Mbps HSDPA handset, the zx20 enables speedy data connections that rival EVDO and are comparable to home networks’ DSL speeds, meaning quicker access to the Web, video content and downloads.
Web browsing, as well as streaming and downloading of contents, will be demonstrated compared by 1.8 Mbps and 384Kbps. 3.6 Mbps HSDPA handset allows users to download contents much faster than WCDMA or GSM/GPRS network. For example, downloading a 4MB mp3 file takes less than 10 seconds at 3.6Mbps HSDPA.
Apart from the HSDPA feature though the phone is a little disappointing. Sure it looks great – a very tidy clamshell, and yes it is very thin, but its line up of features is a little bit 2005. On the plus side it has great quality screen and large easy to use buttons. However it runs using a propietary operating system and has limited smartphone style applications. Worst of all it has a 1.3 mega pixel snapper, which seems poor show from the company that has a seven mega pixel camera phone on its books. Lastly it only has 256MB of internal storage, and again this from a company that has a phone with a three Gigabyte hard disk.
In addition to its entertainment capabilities, the zx20 also features a speakerphone, Bluetooth wireless technology support and a host of messaging options such as AOL, ICQ, Yahoo! and MSN. Users also can personalize their phones with enhanced sound, voice, video and animation.
